Charlotte Mason Book Study Bradford

Charlotte Mason Support Group Dates 2016-2017

It seems each year gets busier and more complicated with more schedules and activities to coordinate.  Finally though, we have got a schedule for this year’s Charlotte Mason Support Group in Bradford.  Please take a minute and write these dates into your calendar before your school year gets busy as well and feel free to forward this information to any friends that you think might be interested in joining us.  As always we will be meeting on Thursday evenings from 7:30-9:30.  New for this year, you are welcome to arrive any time after 7pm to visit or look through the Maple Tree store and we will be starting PROMPTLY at 7:30 with an “On Time” Draw.

This year we will be studying from a video series by Simply Charlotte Mason called “Living and Learning”.  As such, you will not need to buy the videos but will need a notebook which accompanies the series if you’d like to participate regularly.  If you still have not ordered your notebook, please let me know if you’d like me to set one aside for you.  I ordered a few extras.  All notebooks will be in by the end of this week and you are welcome to pick up ahead of time if you wish.

As always, our little group focuses on learning about and implementing a philosophy of education popularized by Charlotte Mason and her writings.  If you are unfamiliar with this style of educating, in brief, she believed that all children were born bright and able to learn – a revolutionary concept in the Victorian English era that she was a part of.  She taught that since all children are made in the image of their Creator that they are creative, bright, inquisitive, intelligent, talented, and able to grasp big ideas.  As such she advocated a liberal (as in, broadly applied) education for all.  She taught that there are three main modes of education: atmosphere, discipline, and life.  By atmosphere she meant that we need to open our children to learning to love to learn and that they shouldn’t be talked down to or isolated in a childish or schoolish environment.  By discipline, she advocated that developing strong habits of mind, virtue, body, and spirit were just as valuable as any academic learning in preparing a child for life.  And by life, she implied that learning should encompass all of life and so included activities like reading great literature, going on nature walks, listening to beautiful music, and viewing the work of master artists and discussing all that was learned.  The end result of this type of education then is that the student builds a relationship with a wide variety of subject matters and develops strong character.

If this style of educating resonates with you then please join us on these upcoming nights!
